It is difficult to overstate how valuable it is to have Annabel’s help with our plans. Without her, it would be a guessing game.
Extending the back of the house so far was not an easy decision. We were concerned that it would warp the look of the house too far and create a monster. What will the Hammond Neighbours say?
Well, here’s what my Dad said:
Thanks for sending the new plan of reno ideas. I see 10 feet plus stairs added to the back, which allows a huge porch and a huge ‘fetish bathroom’, like you asked for. Anyway, I would suggest measuring out 10′ with big markers and considering whether you really want to give up that much yard before you get detailed construction plans – just part of the visualization process.
We only want to do such a large-scale renovation once, and if we don’t give ourselves the space we need to not only simply “get by”, but thrive here, we may end up moving someday. Then this beautiful house would become just another piece in the real estate game.
Buy a house, realize it is not the perfect house for you, sell it, buy another house, realize that one is not perfect either, sell it, buy another house, and on and on…
With these model images, we were reassured that the large back porch helps to keep the original shape of the house intact. Also the inset dormer seems like a natural evolution to the back roof.
In the second image you can see the gabled front porch balanced by the shed addition of the back.
